Lisle, IL (April 14, 2013) – The Chicago Red Stars began their National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season strong, but it was the visiting Seattle Reign FC that were able to capitalize first in the 10th minute off a Christine Nairn header, assisted by Liz Bogus.
In spite of an impressive goalkeeping effort by Seattle’s Michelle Betos, the Red Stars equalized in the 19th minute after a misfire fell to the feet of Zakiya Bywaters. She found Red Stars midfielder Ella Masar in the box, who chipped the ball to an oncoming Lori Chalupny who volleyed home an impressive leveling goal.
In their second year playing together with the Red Stars, Masar and Chalupny are very familiar with each other. “I knew she’d be there,” Masar remarked. “It was a great finish. You get Lori in the six (yard box), she’s going to put the ball away every time.”
Betos was forced to make more hefty saves in the second half when the Red Stars opened with some great early chances, including a 30-yard strike by Alyssa Mautz in the 55th minute that Betos jumped at and barely flicked over the crossbar. In the 61st minute, Chalupny struck a nice ball off a heel-flick from second-half substitute Shannon Boxx, which found Masar’s head, but was eventually cleared out.
Forward Jessica McDonald sent Betos to the left with the denial of an attempt from almost 20 yards out shortly after and Mautz got another chance in the 74th minute, but it went unfinished and neither team was able to find the extra goal to take home three points.
Both teams will begin the season 0-0-1. Seattle is travelling to Mishawaka, Indiana, tomorrow (April 15th) to play the Haiti National Team in a friendly, before meeting Portland Thorns in their home opener in Seattle on Sunday, April 21st.
The Red Stars next match will be at home against Alex Morgan, Christine Sinclair and the Portland Thorns FC on Saturday, April 27th, 7pm. Tickets are on sale now at chicagoredstars.com.
