FLASH TOP SKY BLUE FC 3-0
Kerr, Lloyd and Wambach provide offensive punch for WNY

(June 8, 2013) – Riding a four-game point streak, the Western New York Flash came out of the gates firing on all cylinders and picked up a 3-0 win at Sky Blue FC on Saturday night. It was the Flash’s second win over Sky Blue this season, as they remain the only team to blemish Sky Blue’s record. The Flash improve to 4-2-2 (14 points) on the year, and bump up to third place in the NWSL. Sky Blue falls to 7-2-1 (22 points), as the Flash ends the home team’s five-game winning streak.

It was the second time this year the Flash have put an end to a Sky Blue streak, with the Flash’s first win of 2013 (on May 1st) marking the first loss of Sky Blue’s season.

The Flash didn’t waste any time getting on the board, as Samantha Kerr scored the game’s first goal in the fourth minute. It was an end-to-end goal for WNY, with Angela Salem collecting a pass from the defensive end and sending a clean through ball to Abby Wambach, who timed her run perfectly to get behind the Sky Blue defensive line.

Wambach approached the goal to draw goalkeeper Brittany Cameron and then fed to the far post, finding Kerr who was able to beat her Australian National Team teammate Caitlin Foord.

After opening the first leg with a goal, the Flash ended it with a bang as well, with Carli Lloyd tallying her first goal of the year in the 45th minute. Collecting a ball in the midfield, Wambach sent a cross into the box that Manya Makoski was unable to clear, and Lloyd was in perfect position to pick up the pieces.

The Delran, NJ native fired the ball across the cage and into the upper 90. Not only was it her first marker in a Flash uniform, but Lloyd’s goal came on the campus of her alma mater, Rutgers University.

In the second, with Sky Blue scrambling to cut the difference, the trio of Kerr, Wambach and Lloyd created the final Flash goal in the 82nd minute. Lloyd regained possession for her team by running through a 50/50 ball and laid it off for Kerr on the right side. The Matilda, in turn, sent a cross in towards Wambach who was able to lunge and get her toe on the ball for the final 3-0 score.

The goal was Wambach’s sixth of the year, putting her in a two-way tie for the league lead with USWNT teammate Alex Morgan (Portland).

Wambach entered the game tied for second place in scoring with Sky Blue’s Sophie Schmidt, who was negated by the Flash defense throughout Saturday’s game. Schmidt only took two shots on the night, and both were stopped by Adrianna Franch.

The Flash defense picked up its first shutout of the year, with Franch making five saves in the effort. In the 23rd minute, Lisa De Vanna sent a ball through the 18-yard box, and found an open Kelley O’Hara. But Franch was able to cover her line, and stopped the point-blank shot.

Later in the second half, Franch was able to pull in a shot from CoCo Goodson, taken about 15 yards out. The keeper closed the game with a save on Foord in the waining minutes, after the defense collapsed to stifled the opportunity.

But beyond the goalkeeper’s saves, the defense was able to block a number of shots and came up with some big plays to keep the slate clean. Twenty-eight minutes in, a Flash foul led to a free kick from Danesha Adams, who sent the ball just short of the far post. But Katherine Reynolds was able to block a close-range shot and clear the ball from danger.

On Sky Blue’s second of three corner kicks, Adams set piece was bounced around in the box and sent towards net off the head of Goodson and past Franch. But Wambach was on the line, and kept the ball from going in with her head.

On the offensive end, the Flash had a number of opportunities that could have gone for even more goals.

Early in the first half, Adriana sent a quality cross in towards Wambach who headed it with force, but her effort went just high. The forward had another opportunity in the second half, again off a feed from Adriana. After Lloyd worked to the right side, she found the Spanish international who worked through four defenders at the top of the box. Adriana ultimately dropped it back to Wambach who rocketed a shot from about 25-yards out that was denied by the crossbar.

The defense got in on the offensive end as well, with Alex Sahlen tripping up Cameron in the 21st minute. Appearing to be eyeing the cross, Sahlen sent the ball in toward the keeper’s line and forced Cameron into a tough save, punching the ball out near the endline.

Despite being outshot 15-12, the Flash put seven shots on target compared to Sky Blue’s six.

The Flash have now picked up 13 of their 14 points over the last five games, and look to continue to streak next Saturday at Washington in a 7 p.m. contest. The two teams met in the Nation’s capital in the second game of the season, playing to a 1-1 draw.
