FLASH DEFEAT SPIRIT 2-0
First half goals from Veronica Perez and Vicki DiMartin lead WNY to win

(June 15, 2013) – The Western New York Flash continued its strong play on Saturday, picking up a 2-0 win at Washington, the team’s fifth win in six games. The Flash (5-2-2, 17 points) move into third place in the NWSL with the win and remain unbeaten over the last six games. It was also the team’s second shutout in as many games, after beating Sky Blue 3-0 last Saturday.

Washington falls to 1-5-3 (6 points) with the loss.

Western New York was playing without starters Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd and Samantha Kerr, who were all on National team duties. The Flash had goals from Veronica Perez and Vicki DiMartino, who, in addition to Laura Heyboer, earned the start Saturday.

Despite being held without a shot in the second half, the Flash were able to post all they needed in the first leg to head into halftime with the 2-0 advantage. Perez scored the opening goal for the Flash when she collected a chip from Adriana Martin and fired home just 10 minutes in. Perez was able to find a gap in the Spirit backline and hit a hard shot that went off the hands of Ashlyn Harris before caroming off the right post and in.

Then, in the 31st minute, DiMartino got on the board in her first NWSL start. Playing on the left side, the forward headed home a far-post cross from Alex Sahlen for the 2-0 final.

DiMartino was involved early, setting up Adriana with a chance in the eighth minute but Harris saved her header attempt. Later in the 22nd, DiMartino looked to tally but Harris, the former Flash keeper, came up with another stop.

Midfielder Angela Salem had a solid strike in the 25th minute after Perez played a short free kick to her right side, but Harris tipped the ball just above the crossbar.

It was a tale of two halves, with the Flash outshooting Washington 10-1 in the first 45. Washington’s lone attempt of that half came in the fifth minute but was stopped by Franch. However, WNY played the majority of the second in their defensive end, but were able to contain the Spirit and keep the clean slate.

“We knew the second half they would come at us,” Lines said. “Were able to defend well, and they had numerous corners. I’m happy with gritty performance in second half and happy with clean sheet. It’s a great confidence builder for the defense.”

Washington created all eight of its corner kick opportunities in that half, but all were kept at bay by the defense. The home team had a couple scoring opportunities late in the half off those corners. In the second half, Franch punched out Lori Lindsey’s corner, but the ball found a Spirit shooter. After McCall Zerboni blocked that attempt, the ball again went to a Washington body with Kika Toulouse unable to convert on a near open net after Franch was recovering from the punch out.

Five minutes later, a Lindsey corner went through the hands of Franch but Jodi-Ann Robinson was on the other end of the ball and cleared it from danger.

Early in the second half, Stephanie Ochs had a one-on-one with Franch after a Flash turnover in the back third. But the goalkeeper came out of the 18-yard box and slid to the ground to end the breakaway attempt.

The Flash’s best opportunity of the second half was generated by the boot of Brittany Taylor, who sent long ball to Perez from the midline. The ball found the Mexican international at the open top of the box, but her first touch was off and cleared by the Spirit defense.

Western New York notched six shots on goal, compared to three from Washington, while they were upped 8-4 in corner kick opportunities.

The Flash will end a four-game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Chicago for a 7:30 (ET) contest with the Red Stars. The team then returns to Sahlen’s Stadium on June 23rd to host the Seattle Reign in “A Pit Stop for Camp Good Days”. The Flash will be partnering with Watkins Glen to promote Six Hours of the Glen, with specialty Glen jerseys to be auctioned off following the game. All proceeds will go to Camp Good Days and Special Times.

Tickets for all Flash home games can be purchased by calling the Sahlen’s Stadium box office at (585) 454-KICK or online at wnyflash.com.
