SKY BLUE FC BEAT BREAKERS 3-2
SBFC remain in first place with goals from Lisa De Vanna, Monica Ocampo and Kary Freels

(June 16, 2013) – Sky Blue FC handed Boston its first home loss of the season, defeating the Breakers 3-2 at Dilboy Stadium before a sell-out crowd of 2,687. Lisa De Vanna got on the board in the 9th minute off a pass from Monica OCampo, and Ocampo added a goal of her own in the 26th minute. Katy Freels scored the eventual game winner in the 70th minute as Sky Blue FC improves to 8-2-1 on the season while Boston is now 3-4-3.

Sky Blue FC came out strong as it maintained the majority of the possession in the early minutes. Although both teams were playing well defensively, Sky Blue FC would strike first. The first shot of the game was taken by De Vanna, who found the back of the net off a feed from Ocampo. The assist was the first career point for Ocampo, but she wasn't done yet.

In the 26th minute, Freels looked to play a ball through the Breakers defense to Ocampo just inside the box. Despite the ball being deflected off a defender, Ocampo collected the ball and slipped it past Boston goalkeeper Ashley Phillips for her first National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) goal.

Boston picked up the tempo for the rest of the half as the team tried to get something on the board before halftime, but a near goal line save by defender CoCo Goodson kept the Breakers scoreless going into the locker room.

A couple of substitutions were made at the start of the second half with Nayeli Rangel coming in for De Vanna and goalkeeper Alysaa Naeher getting her first minutes for Boston. According to Sky Blue FC head coach Jim Gabarra, De Vanna, who took a knee to the back, experienced ongoing pain.

The Breakers showed the squad wasn't going down without a fight, and the team's efforts finally paid off in the 60th minute. Defender Julie King sent a ball into the far post and midfielder Joanna Lohman headed it past goalkeeper Brittany Cameron for Boston's first goal of the contest.

Sky Blue FC struck back ten minutes later when Freels one-timed a pass from forward Danesha Adams into the upper right-hand corner of the net. The goal was Freels first of the season.

Seven minutes of injury time was added, and Boston took advantage by scoring one final goal of the night off a corner.

"I am proud of the team's performance tonight. Once again, a group of players stepped up," said Gabarra, who also remarked it was good to bounce back from last week's loss.

Next up for Sky Blue FC is the Saturday, June 22nd home match against Portland Thorns FC at 7 PM ET. It will be a battle for first place as both teams currently have 25 points this season.
