BREAKERS COME BACK TO DRAW WITH SEATTLE 1-1
Boston's Sydney Leroux scores her eighth goal of the season

(July 3, 2013) - A goal by Sydney Leroux in the 63rd minute Wednesday night helped salvage a 1-1 tie with Seattle Reign FC in front of 1,430 fans at Starfire Stadium in Seattle. For Leroux, it was her eighth goal of the season, tying her for the league lead with FC Kansas City’s Lauren Cheney.

The tie sends Boston’s record to 4-5-4. The team remains in fifth place in the National Women’s Soccer League table. Seattle remains in seventh place, improving to 2-9-3.

After a scoreless first half, one in which produced a few chances for both sides, the Reign took a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute off a goal from Jessica McDonald. The newly acquired forward from the Chicago Red Stars took a cross from Christine Nairn and slotted it past Alyssa Naeher for the 1-0 lead.

But less than 10 minutes later, Leroux equalized. The play began with Heather O’Reilly darting into the left side of the box. She took it all the way to the 6-yard box, before sending it in front of goal. The ball deflected off Seattle defender Kaylyn Kyle and fell right to Leroux’s feet. Leroux quickly hit it past Hope Solo to tie the game.

Halfway through the first half produced scoring opportunities for each team. In the 23rd minute, Mariah Nogueira had a header saved by Solo, and in minute 28, Naeher raced out to the top of the box and just beat McDonald to the ball and prevented a potential goal. Lianne Sanderson hit a shot from distance in the 29th minute, but it was deflected out by a defender.

Boston’s best chance in the first half came in the 41st minute. O’Reilly’s corner kick into the box went to Joanna Lohman, who quickly played it back to O’Reilly. O’Reilly sent it back into the box and Lohman flicked a header on goal, one that forced Solo to tip it over the bar.

The big story in the second half for Boston was Naeher. She stopped dangerous shots by Megan Rapinoe and McDonald, the latter a diving effort, to preserve the draw. Both Leroux and Sanderson had shots on goal in 89th minute, but Solo stopped both.

The Breakers return to action Saturday at JELD-WEN Field to take on Portland Thorns FC. The match begins at 10:30 p.m. ET.
