FLASH BATTLE BACK TO EARN 2-2 DRAW WITH BREAKERS
WNY scores two goals in final 15 minutes to earn point on the road

(August 3, 2013) – For the second time, the Western New York Flash fought to an exciting draw at Dilboy Stadium with a come-from-behind 2-2 result against the Breakers. Down by two goals with less than 15 minutes to play, Vicki DiMartino and Carli Lloyd scored to grab one point and add to the team’s playoff push.

A win, paired with a Seattle win over Chicago, would have clinched a postseason berth for the Flash but they will instead have three remaining games to secure one of the top four spots in the league.

After Kyah Simon and Lianne Sanderson scored to make the game 2-0, DiMartino was able to breakthrough in the 77th minute with a quick shot that made its way past Boston goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

Then, eight-minutes later, midfielder Carli Lloyd ripped a shot from outside, picking out the upper 90 to tie the game at 2-2. Sarah Huffman, who was moved to left back in place of injured defender Alex Sahlen, earned the assist on Lloyd’s goal.

It was another nail-biting performance from the Flash who tied the Breakers by the same score back on June 5th when Jodi-Ann Robinson scored on a header in extra time.

Simon got the home team on the scoreboard 17 minutes in. Following a corner kick, the ball came out to newly minted player/coach Cat Whitehill on the left side who instantly sent it back into the box. The former USWNT defender connected with Simon on the far post who struck the ball past Adrianna Franch and gave the home team a 1-0 lead early on.

With that score holding for the remainder of the half, the Breakers doubled their lead when Katie Schoepfer took a shot on the right side, barely missing the left post after a deflection in the 64th minute. That shot led to a corner, which resulted in Boston’s second goal of the game. On the ensuring set piece, Sanderson found the ball after a scramble at the top of the box and fired low into the right corner.

But that lead wouldn’t hold as Western New York picked up their seventh tie in their final road test of the season.

Both teams had quality opportunities over the 90 minutes, but neither was able to find the game-winning mark. Seven minutes in, Samantha Kerr hustled to keep a ball in play, touching over to McCall Zerboni who played it back to the Australian on a flag run. Kerr took one touch then crossed to forward Abby Wambach, but the team’s leading scorer was unable to get a quality chance on goal.

Seconds later, Boston’s Sydney Leroux crossed but neither Rhian Wilkinson or Simon could reach the ball in time and it went out of bounds for a goal kick.

Kerr had a golden opportunity in the 50th minute when she was sent running on the right side, going one-on-one with Naeher. After a touch to the right, she had a chance at a nearly open net but her shot sailed over the bar.

Franch came up with her biggest save of the game following Western New York’s first goal. Off the restart, Schoepfer broke out alone but Franch was able to come up with the point-blank stop and keep the Flash within one.

The Flash are now 8-4-7 (31 points) and sit four points behind third seeded Sky Blue FC.

The team returns to Sahlen’s Stadium on Wednesday when it hosts the Seattle Reign at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for the game are available by calling the Sahlen’s Stadium Box Office at (585) 454-KICK or online at wnyflash.com.

Fans are encourage to bring their dogs to the game to celebrate the “Dog Days of Summer” and/or participate in the pre-game Sahlen’s Stadium scavenger hunt to win Flash prizes. Registration for the “Puppy Pursuit” can be found here.
