In just her third game, Washington Spirit rookie forward Mallory Pugh scored the first goal of her NWSL career. Pugh and the Spirit earned a 2-0 win over the Houston Dash Saturday at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex in front of 3,096 fans.
The 19-year-old Pugh, who recently left UCLA to join the NWSL, scored in the 69th minute to seal the win for the Spirit, their second victory of the season.
Pugh’s goal was the product of good team passing by the Spirit. Spirit midfielder Havana Solaun found midfielder Kristie Mewis in the middle of the penalty area and Mewis quickly passed to Pugh, wide open on the left wing. Pugh then sent a right-footed shot through the legs of Dash goalkeeper Lydia Williams to make it 2-0.
Pugh made her NWSL debut on May 20 before earning her first NWSL start last week.
Spirit forward Cheyna Williams scored her first goal of the season, from an assist by Solaun, to put the Spirit up 1-0 in the just the third minute. She scored three goals for Washington last season.
Spirit goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé made eight saves in the game to earn her first clean sheet of the season. She leads the NWSL with 39 saves.
