McCall Zerboni scored the first goal in North Carolina Courage history, hammering home a cross from Makenzy Doniak in the 18th minute. The Courage went on to beat the Washington Spirit 1-0 at the Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland.
After Zerboni’s goal, the vaunted North Carolina Courage offense was stymied for the rest of the match by Washington goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé, who was valiant in defeat. The Canadian international made eight saves, several spectacular. Her best stretch came in the second half where she stopped shots from reigning MVP Lynn Williams, 2016 Best XI forward Jessica McDonald and new addition Debinha in a span of eight minutes.
North Carolina took 21 shots, including 9 on goal, in the match.
