In a wild game on Saturday night, the Washington Spirit topped Sky Blue FC 4-3 at the Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Washington forward Francisca Ordega led the way for the Spirit, tallying two goals and assist in the game. It was also her shot that forced an own goal from Sky Blue FC defender Erin Simon, meaning Ordega contributed on all four of Washington’s goals.
Washington came into the match having scored just one goal in its previous three matches but had scored three by the end of the first half.
Ordega forced the own goal in the 26th minute before sending a pass that Havana Solaun sent to the back of the net in the 34th to put the Spirit up 3-1. In 50th minute, midfielder Sarah Killion scored to pull Sky Blue within one.
Ordega’s 56th minute goal gave Washington a 4-2 lead and was the eventual game winner.
Killion scored her second goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 71st minute, but Sky Blue couldn’t find the tying goal.
Spirit goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé, the NWSL leader in saves, stopped six in the match, including a game-saving stop on a free kick by O’Hara in the 94th minute as Sky Blue FC pushed hard for the equalizer until the final whistle.
