Julie Ertz scored her second goal of the season and the Chicago Red Stars avenged their opening day loss to the Houston Dash with a 2-0 win Saturday afternoon at Toyota Park.
Ertz’s goal came in the second half with Chicago already up 1-0 as she cleaned up a loose ball in the box. In the 61st minute, Red Stars forward Christen Press’ cross fell to Danielle Colaprico, who got a touch on it that Ertz was able to collect. Ertz’s left-footed shot beat Dash goalkeeper Lydia Williams to give the Red Stars a 2-0 lead.
Red Stars defender Arin Gilliland collided with Dash forward Kealia Ohai on the play and briefly left the match. She returned and played most of the rest of the second half before being subbed out in the 90th minute.
Chicago’s first goal of the match came via an own goal by Dash forward Sarah Hagen. Colaprico served a free kick into the box that Hagen tried to head over the bar, but knocked past Williams and into the back of the net.
Dash midfielder Morgan Brian, who has been recovering from a right knee MCL sprain, subbed into the match in the 72nd minute for her first action of the season.
Following Saturday’s result, the Red Stars and Dash are both 2-2-0.
