The official 2018 Algarve Cup groups were announced Wednesday for the 12-team tournament that will take place in Portugal early next year. The tournament will take place from February 28 to March 7.
Group 1 features Australia, Norway, Korea Republic and Portugal. Australia won the 2017 Tournament of Nations earlier this summer with wins over the United States, Japan and Brazil. The Matildas are flying high after a strong end to the season and reigning NWSL MVP in Sam Kerr’s scoring streak.
In Group 2, we’ll see Sweden, Canada, China and Russia. Canada finished second in 2017 after winning the tournament in 2016. Canada is coming off a comeback 3-2 win over Norway in Spain earlier this month as Thorns forward Christine Sinclair scored her 169th international goal.
Rounding out the tournament in Group 3: the Euro 2017 champion Netherlands, as well as Japan, Denmark and Iceland.
