Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr has been voted August Player of the Month by the NWSL Media Association.

Kerr scored five goals and chipped in one assist to lead the Red Stars to an undefeated 1-0-3 month of August. Heading into NWSL Week 23 action, the Red Stars sit in fourth place with an 8-4-10 overall record and 34 points.

Kerr scored in all but one game played in August. She scored back-to-back braces in Week 21 and Week 22 action. In Week 22 her two-goal performance put her in the lead of the 2018 Golden Boot race with 14 goals. She finished the month with 26 shots, 11 on target and eight chances created.

Kerr’s first goal of the month solidified a 1-1 result with the 2018 NWSL Shield winners, the North Carolina Courage. She headed home her tenth goal of the season in the 64th minute for the equalizer.

Her second and third goals of the month came against the Thorns in Week 21 play. Kerr first finished in the 44th minute beating Portland’s backline in the box and sneaking one past Adrianna Franch. Kerr’s second on the night was a header goal in the 48th minute off a cross from Red Stars midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo.

To cap off the month, Kerr scored a brace and added an assist to spoil the Pride’s playoff hopes and move her team to fourth place in the standings. Kerr’s 13th goal of the season came in the 44th minute, and her league-leading 14th (her 57th NWSL career goal) came in the 59th minute after she stole the ball from Pride defender Alanna Kennedy and slipped it past Ashlyn Harris for the 3-0 lead on the road.

Seattle Reign FC goalkeeper Lydia Williams finished second in Player of the Month voting. North Carolina Courage forward Lynn Williams was third.
