After a scoreless first half, Natasha Dowie struck first for the Boston Breakers in the 47th minute and led her team to their first win on the road this season over the Washington Spirit. The win at the Plex also snapped a 13-game winless streak on the road, as well as a five-game losing streak.

Boston also got a nice boost from their second-half scoring, after struggling with it all season. Before this game, they had only managed nine goals in the second 45 all season, but Dowie and co. were ready to go from the locker room.

The Washington Spirit added two own goals in two minutes in the 54th and 55th minute to the Breakers’ final scoreline of 3-0. Adriana Leon and Brooke Elby were crucial for Boston in getting the ball into dangerous positions to force the own goals.

Forward Mallory Pugh pushed for a couple of late goals of her own for the red and white, but both her efforts were whistled offside after she found the back of the net.

Ultimately, Breakers goalkeeper Abby Smith earned her third clean sheet of the season. She finished the match with three saves, including a big one in the 86th minute on Cali Farquharson.

Dowie’s game-winner for the Breakers came as she was wearing the captain’s armband for the team, with Julie King sidelined by an ankle sprain this week. Her goal was the eighth of her career, and her first ever on the road for Boston. Also notable for the visitors: forward Hayley Dowd made her professional debut.
