Chicago Red Stars midfielder Sofia Huerta has earned NWSL Player of the Month honors for April, as voted by the NWSL Media Association.
The Red Stars played four games in April and Huerta scored twice in Week 4 action. The midfielder was also named Week 4 Player of the Week for her two goals in two games performance.
She scored her first goal against the Houston Dash on Wednesday, April 18 and her second goal against Sky Blue FC on Saturday, April 21. In Week 5 action, Huerta helped her team earn one point on the road against the Washington Spirit on Saturday, April 28. For the month of April she helped the Red Stars go 2-0-2 in league play – they are in second place in the league standings with an overall record of 2-1-3.
Huerta’s goals in April were ones to remember – the first sealed a 3-0 victory over the Houston Dash and her second against Sky Blue was the fifth-fastest goal in NWSL history, she scored just 44 seconds into the game. While Huerta didn’t score in Week 5, she was a key asset in holding the Red Stars midfield together against the Spirit. In addition to her pair of goals on the month, Huerta also had six total shots on goal and created nine chances. Her six shots on goal are fourth in the league.
Huerta is no stranger to league honors, she has been honored NWSL Player of the Week on four different occasions and also earned NWSL Player of the Month for May in 2015.
