Breakers forward Natasha Dowie scored her first goal of the season and No. 1 overall draft pick Rose Lavelle earned her first NWSL assist as Boston topped Sky Blue FC 1-0. The win came in Boston’s home opener at Jordan Field.

Lavelle found Dowie in behind the Sky Blue defense in the 37th minute and Dowie, who scored three goals for the Breakers in 2016, slotted it past goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan to put Boston on the scoreboard.

Breakers goalkeeper Abby Smith earned the shutout, making four saves vs. Sky Blue FC. Her best stop came in the 23rd minute, pushing away a point-blank header from Sky Blue forward Kelley O’Hara.

Another Breakers rookie, Margaret Purce, nearly made in 2-0 in the 66th minute, after getting past Sky Blue FC defender Christie Pearce, but the second-half sub’s shot crashed into the crossbar.
