Utah Royals FC announced the signing of Iceland international midfielder Gunnhildur Yrsa Jonsdottir on Wednesday. The move is pending her P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.
Jonsdottir has 48 appearances for Iceland and most recently scored twice for Iceland in a 2019 Women’s World Cup qualifier vs. the Faroe Island in October. She also played all 90 minutes in Iceland’s next game — a historic 3-2 upset of Germany in Women’s World Cup qualification.
“[Jonsdottir] is a player that I think will transition well into the NWSL, as she has played at international levels and numerous leagues around Europe. Her experience will be great for the group,” Reign coach Laura Harvey said in the Royals news release about the signing. “Her enthusiasm on the field is infectious. I’m glad we could complete this deal as I think it is another huge statement for our club.”
Jonsdottir has spent the last five seasons playing in Norway.
“My goal is to come in and give everything I can to this club and my teammates, and hopefully help us win a championship,” Jonsdottir said. “I have followed the NWSL and I know it is a difficult league to win, but I am an Icelandic and we always have big dreams and know that anything is possible. I believe this will be something special and I can’t wait to get started.”
