Washington Spirit head coach and general manager Jim Gabarra has been fired, the club announced on Tuesday. The Spirit are 2-15-4 and most recently lost 4-0 to the Houston Dash on Friday night.
Assistant coach Tom Torres will take over as interim head coach and the team will search for a new head coach this offseason. Spirit president Chris Hummer has been named general manager, the club said.
“Jim has put as much of his heart and soul into women’s soccer, this league and this team as anyone,” Spirit owner Bill Lynch said in the team’s announcement. “He is a great professional with exceptional character and we can’t thank him enough for his efforts and wish him the best of luck.”
The Spirit fell to the Dash 4-0 on Friday, their 12th straight game without a win (0-10-2 over those 12 games) and eighth straight loss. They’ve scored just once since a 3-2 loss to the Dash on May 27.
Gabarra took over as Spirit coach in 2016 and made it to the NWSL Championship. The Spirit finished in last place in 2017 and are in eighth place this year.
Torres’ first game will be on Wednesday night at home vs. Utah Royals FC and then the second will be Saturday night vs. Portland Thorns FC at Audi Field.
