Joanna Lohman was injured in Washington's first game of the season.

Washington midfielder Joanna Lohman announced on Twitter Monday afternoon that she has torn the ACL in her left knee.

“It is with an incredible amount of sadness that I inform you I tore my ACL,” she wrote. “This team & everyone involved helps me in ways I can never fully express, so I’m most disappointed that I won’t be able to share our mission on the field.”

Lohman was injured shortly before McCall Zerboni scored for North Carolina in the 18th minute, and was subbed off a few minutes later.

Lohman posted a follow-up to her initial tweet, saying her doctor had called her “valiant” for continuing to play after she injured her knee.

Lohman is expected to miss the rest of the season.

“It’s extremely unfortunate. Joanna worked incredibly hard during the offseason and was poised for another excellent year,” Washington coach general manager and head coach Jim Gabarra said in a team press release. “She will have our full support throughout her recovery process.”

Lohman has been a member of the Spirit since 2014 and scored 4 goals last season.
