In a social media post shared Monday, Washington Spirit defender Kassey Kallman said she won’t return to the NWSL in 2018.

With a conflicted heart, I’m announcing that I will not be returning to the NWSL for this upcoming season as of now. Stepping away from the game I love has been a tough decision, but I’m certain it’s the right decision for me at this time,” she wrote.  “I’m definitely not calling it a retirement. If situations align in the future I would love nothing more than stepping back on the field in the best league in the world.”

Kallman has played four seasons in the NWSL. Her first was with FC Kansas City in 2014. She then spent two years in Boston with the Breakers before being traded to the Spirit ahead of the 2017 season. She played 17 matches and 1,400 minutes for the Spirit last season.
