Olympique Lyonnais topped Manchester City 3-1 in a highly-anticipated meeting between NWSL players and U.S. women’s national team teammates Carli Lloyd (Houston Dash) and Alex Morgan (Orlando Pride) in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinal matchup in Manchester, England.
With the win and three road goals, Lyon, who won the UWCL title last year, now hold a commanding lead as the two teams get set to play the final leg on Saturday, April 29.
While neither Lloyd nor Morgan scored in the match, they both were involved in several goals.
It was Lloyd who was called for a handball in the box in just the second minute, which led to Saki Kumagi converting the penalty kick to give Lyon the early 1-0 lead. Just eight minutes later, Lloyd passed to Toni Duggan, who then sent a through ball to a sprinting Kosovare Asllani for a goal, tying the game 1-1.
In the 16th minute, Morgan started the play that led to Lyon’s second goal of the match, sending a ball into the box which Camille Abily passed to Dzsenifer Marozsán for the game-winner.
Both Morgan and Lloyd are expected to rejoin their NWSL teams later this summer.
Lyon and Manchester City will meet again for the second and final leg of the semifinals on Saturday at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
