North Carolina took 42 shots and put 15 on target — but Alyssa Naeher earned the Chicago Red Stars a 1-1 draw on the road with a 12 save performance on Sunday afternoon. A crowd of 4,068 came out to Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park to close out Week 6.

Naeher’s 12 saves, several spectacular, kept the top-ranked team off the board for most of the game, but McCall Zerboni tied the game in the 82nd minute to keep the Courage unbeaten.

The Courage remain in first place at 5-0-2 with 17 points. The Red Stars are now 2-2-4 with 10 points and in third place.

But it was Naeher who was the story on the day.

In the 17th minute, she stopped a long-distance shot from Zerboni that would’ve given the Courage an early lead.

Then in the 66th minute, Naeher made a diving stop on a Crystal Dunn shot to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Naeher made another key save on Dunn in the 49th minute, and also shut down Sam Mewis in the 53rd minute.

The Red Stars got the lead in the 37th minute when Sam Kerr scored her first goal in a Red Stars uniform.

Zerboni tied the game in the 82nd minute for the Courage. On a Jaelene Hinkle corner kick — one of North Carolina’s 12 in the match, Abby Erceg flicked it to Zerboni, who volleyed it past Naeher to finally put the Courage on the board.

The Courage dominated the Opta stats at the end of the match. Total shots 42-8, shots on goal 15-2, corner kicks 12-3 and possession 58% to 42%.

Both teams are next in action on Saturday as the Courage host the Spirit and the Red Stars host the Dash.
