The Chicago Red Stars and Portland Thorns FC played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois, in Week 12.

The Red Stars announced before the game that Sofia Huerta, Sam Johnson and Taylor Comeau were all unavailable for the game due to a pending trade involving the Red Stars. They said the additional details would be provided following approval from the NWSL league office. The Red Stars also announced that they had waived midfielder Lauren Kaskie on Saturday. With the Red Stars short two defenders, Julie Ertz started at centerback for Chicago.

Yuki Nagasato scored the game’s first goal in the 43rd minute after Sam Kerr was fouled in the box. Nagasato’s initial penalty kick was saved by Thorns goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom, but Nagasato cleaned up the rebound for her second goal of the year.

Lindsey Horan tied the game in the 48th minute following a free kick taken by Andressinha.

Both teams had late chances to break the stalemate, but goalkeepers came up big. First, Eckerstrom stopped Red Stars forward Sam Kerr in the 86th minute.

And then in the 90th minute, Red Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher turned aside a cross from Thorns forward Tyler Lussi.

Several players made their returns from injury in the match. For the Red Stars, Casey Short subbed in at the 65th minute and Vanessa DiBernardo came on in the 79th minute. Thorns forward Hayley Raso entered in the 76th minute. All three players earned their first minutes of the 2018 season.

Horan earned her fifth yellow card in the game, meaning she will be suspended for Portland’s next match.

The Thorns will next face the Houston Dash on Friday night at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. The Red Stars will host Utah Royals FC (who upset the previously unbeaten Courage in Week 12) on Saturday night.
