Seattle Reign FC announced Wednesday that they had signed Denmark defender Theresa NielsenNielsen’s signing is pending receipt of her P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate

Nielsen joins the Reign for the 2018 season, after playing for Vålerenga Fotball Damer in Norway in 2017. Prior to that, she played for Brøndby IF in Denmark.

Nielsen was also a member of Denmark’s Euro 2017 team, which finished second in the tournament this past summer in the Netherlands. She was named to the Best XI following the tournament.

“Theresa was one of the players on my wish list when I accepted the job in Seattle,” new Reign head coach Vlatko Andonovski said in the Reign’s news release about the trade. “Her ability to attack from the back is what is going to make us more dangerous as a team.”

“I’m very grateful to be getting the opportunity to play for Reign FC,” said Nielsen. “The U.S. has some of the greatest players in the world, and I’m very excited that I’ll be blessed with the chance to play with and against them.”

The Reign also announced on Wednesday that they had waived defender Rachel Corsie. Corsie played for Seattle from 2015-17 and started 37 games for the Reign.

“Rachel was a special player for this club and will be missed,” Reign FC owner Bill Predmore said in a statement from the Reign. “Rachel played a role in some of the club’s biggest moments and has been a part of many special memories in and around the club. It is difficult to see her go, but she departs with our appreciation and deepest respect for all she contributed to the organization.”

Earlier Wednesday, the Reign traded defender Merritt Mathias to North Carolina.

Also on Wednesday, the Houston Dash signed a pair of midfielders: Michaela Hahn and Allison Wetherington.

Hahn played for the Western New York Flash in 2016, scoring one goal in 13 games, before spending time in 2017 in Cyprus playing for Apollon Ladies F.C. She was also signed briefly by the Reign in 2017, but did not appear in a game for Seattle.

Wetherington played for the University of Portland from 2013-16. She scored 13 goals and 20 assists in her college career.

The news comes two days after the Dash announced that Kealia Ohai had re-signed with the team ahead of the 2018 season.
