Sky Blue FC midfielder Raquel Rodriguez scored off a corner kick in the 83rd minute and Sky Blue went on to win 1-0 over FC Kansas City at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J., in front of 2,562 at their home opener.

The goal came off a Kelley O’Hara corner kick into the box. Rodriguez collected a pass from Mandy Freeman who slotted it past FC Kansas City goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.

FC Kansas City thought they had tied the game in the 88th minute, but Brittany Ratcliffe‘s apparent header goal was called back because she was offside.

Sky Blue FC rookie goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, who was the No. 23 overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft, earned the first shoutout of her NWSL career.

Midfielder Desiree Scott made her first appearance for FC Kansas City after missing the first two of games of the year with an ankle sprain.

FC Kansas City was without forward Shea Groom, who missed Sunday’s game with a broken rib suffered last week vs. Chicago. Sky Blue FC was without defender Christie Pearce (league concussion protocol) and forward Sam Kerr, who was in Australia to attend the Dolan Warren Awards.
