Sky Blue FC forward Sam Kerr has been named the May Player of the Month by the NWSL Media Association.
Kerr scored two goals and two assists over five games during the month of May. Sky Blue FC went 3-2 over that span and currently sits in third place in the NWSL.
Both of Kerr’s assists came on game-winning goals for Sky Blue.
On May 13, Sky Blue beat the Dash 3-1 in Houston and the 23-year-old contributed on all three goals in the match. She earned a penalty kick in the 32nd minute (which Sarah Killion converted), assisted on Leah Galton’s goal (the eventual game-winner) in the 53rd minute and scored one of her own to seal the win in the 87th minute. The strike was her first goal of the season. Her no-look pass that led to Galton’s goal helped earn the play a Goal of the Week nomination.
On May 27, Sky Blue beat the Orlando Pride 2-1, with Kerr once again contributing on every goal. After falling behind 1-0, Kerr evened the score in the 43rd minute with a right-footed shot after midfielder Daphne Corboz found her open in the box. In the 82nd minute, Kerr assisted on Maya Hayes’ game-winning goal, jumping up for a header in the middle of the field after a goal kick from goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.
Kerr has 28 career regular season goals, fourth all-time in NWSL history.
The Australian international was recently named the MVP of the Westfield W-League 2016-17 season. She is the fourth Sky Blue FC player ever to be named Player of the Month, joining Brittany Cameron, Monica Ocampo and Nadia Nadim.
The NWSL Player of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
