Two rookies — Rose Lavelle and Kailen Sheridan — are among the 11 players named to the second-ever NWSL Team of the Month, selected by the NWSL Media Association for May 2017. They join May Player of the Month Sam Kerr on the list.
Five different countries — the United States, France, Japan, Canada and Australia — are represented on the squad.
The Red Stars lead the way with four players. Sky Blue FC has three players on the roster. The Breakers, Reign, Thorns and FC Kansas City each have one player on the team.
Take a look at the full roster, which lines up in a 3-4-3 formation.
GK: Kailen Sheridan, Sky Blue FC
The rookie made 11 saves in a valiant effort vs. the North Carolina Courage on May 24 and now leads the NWSL with 33 saves so far this season (19 of which came during the month of May).
D: Samantha Johnson, Chicago Red Stars
Johnson started all four games and made six tackles, helping lead a stingy Red Stars defense that allowed just four goals in May.
D: Becky Sauerbrunn, FC Kansas City
Sauerbrunn’s month of May was so good she finished it by winning Goal of the Week. Yes, really. The three-time NWSL Defender of the Year played every minute as FC Kansas City allowed just three goals in May, posting two shutouts in four games. Sauerbrunn finished third in Player of the Month voting.
D: Casey Short, Chicago Red Stars
Short played every minute and made 12 tackles in the month of May, joining Johnson on Chicago’s tough defensive line as the Red Stars finished May unbeaten (3-0-1).
M: Danielle Colaprico, Chicago Red Stars
In Week 7, Colaprico won Save of the Week and scored a goal in the same game. She added ten tackles in four games in May.
M: Amandine Henry, Portland Thorns FC
Henry recorded her first NWSL goal in Portland’s 2-0 win over Boston in Week 7 and was involved in both goals as her header forced the first-minute own goal.
M: Rose Lavelle, Boston Breakers
The April Player of the Month showed no signs of slowing down in May, adding the second goal of her NWSL career in a 1-1 draw in Chicago.
M: Sarah Killion, Sky Blue FC
Sarah Killion started off the month of May with a two goal performance vs. the Washington Spirit on May 6. She also continued her penalty kick dominance — she has never missed in her NWSL career — by converting three in May. Killion leads the NWSL with five goals.
F: Nahomi Kawasumi, Seattle Reign FC
Kawasumi smashed two NWSL records in Week 5 vs. Washington as she became the first NWSL player to record four assists and be directly involved in five goals in one game. She added another assist in Week 7 and currently leads the league with five assists.
F: Christen Press, Chicago Red Stars
Press scored an 89th minute equalizer vs. Boston in Week 5 and followed it up with a Player of the Week performance in Week 6, notching a goal and an assist vs. North Carolina. She finished second in Player of the Month voting.
F: Sam Kerr, Sky Blue FC
Kerr, the May Player of the Month, scored two goals and assisted on two game-winners for Sky Blue FC as her team went 3-2 in May and moved into third place in the NWSL.
