Canada 3 Korea Republic 0

 

Christine Sinclair now trails Abby Wambach’s international record by just 12 goals. Following a brace in Canada’s 3-0 win over Korea Republic on Monday at the Algarve Cup, the Portland Thorns FC forward has 172 international goals, second only to Wambach’s 184.

 

Goal No. 171 came when Sinclair cleaned up the rebound after her initial penalty kick attempt was saved.

 

Sinclair’s 172nd goal happened in the 79th minute. Sky Blue FC forward Janine Beckie’s initial shot was saved, but the rebound bounced right to Sinclair, who knocked it in with her left foot.

 

 

Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan played all 90 minutes and earned the shutout. Utah Royals FC midfielder Maegan Kelly earned her fourth international cap in the game.

Canada will next play Japan for fifth place in the Algarve Cup. Japan beat Denmark 2-0 in their meeting on Monday.

Elsewhere in the Algarve Cup, the Netherlands tied Iceland 0-0. The European champions will play Sweden on Wednesday for the title. Sweden beat Russia 3-0 to win Group B.

Portugal beat Norway 2-0 and will now face Australia in the third place game. Despite being the host nation, Portugal has never finished higher than fifth. The Matildas beat China 2-0 behind goals from Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr and Chloe Logarzo.


 

Cyprus Cup Day 3 Results

Italy and Spain will meet in Wednesday’s Cyprus Cup final after finishing at the top of their groups. On Monday, Italy tied Finland 2-2 and Spain beat the Czech Republic 2-0.

In other Monday Cyprus Cup action, Switzerland and Wales drew 0-0, Belgium beat Austria 2-0, Spain topped the Czech Republic 2-0, Hungary and Slovakia finished 1-1 and South Africa tied Korea DPR 0-0.

 


In other international games, New Zealand fell to Scotland 2-0. North Carolina Courage defender Abby Erceg returned to the New Zealand team in the game, and was in the starting XI. Over the weekend, Utah Royals FC midfielder Katie Bowen made her 50th international appearance for the Football Ferns.

 

 

Houston Dash goalkeeper Bianca Henninger earned the start for Mexico in the final of the Alanya Women’s Cup in Turkey. Mexico lost to France’s B-team 2-1.
