FC Kansas City forward Sydney Leroux has been named the Player of the Week for Week 7 by the NWSL Media Association following her performance in Kansas City’s 3-2 win over the Washington Spirit on Saturday.
It’s the fourth Player of the Week honor of her career, and the first time since’s won since 2014. She missed all of 2016 due to the birth of her son.
Leroux scored two first half goals as Kansas City quickly erased an early deficit after falling behind 1-0 just five minutes in.
In the 9th minute, Leroux collected a Brittany Ratcliffe pass, beat the Washington defense and sent a left-footed shot past Spirit goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé to tie the game 1-1. Her goal in the 27th minute gave FC Kansas City a 2-1 lead. Forward Shea Groom forced a turnover at the top of the box and held off her defender while Leroux collected the loose ball and quickly fired it past Labbé for her third goal of the season.
Leroux became the 14th NWSL player to score 20 career regular season goals.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
