The North Carolina Courage have acquired defender Merritt Mathias in a trade with Seattle Reign FC, the teams announced Wednesday.
In the deal, Seattle sent Mathias and their natural second round pick in the 2019 NWSL College Draft to North Carolina in exchange for the Courage’s natural first round pick in the same draft.
Mathias has played for Seattle and FC Kansas City in her five NWSL seasons. She was acquired by the Reign in a trade ahead of the 2015 season. She scored two goals and an assist for the Reign last season.
“Merritt is a proven professional and has aspirations to play at the international level,” Courage coach Paul Riley said in a team news release about the trade. “She is powerful, quick and will provide a fantastic attacking spark out of the back. I drafted her in WPS, so I know her qualities. Love her mindset, final third prowess, and desire to push the envelope. The fans will embrace her attitude, bite and tenacity. Certainly a huge addition to our squad, and we look forward to getting the best out of her performance”
