Utah Royals FC beat the Washington Spirit 2-0 on Saturday night, their first win in franchise history. The victory came at home with a crowd of 7,551 in attendance at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.

Kelley O’Hara — lined up at forward on the evening — put the home side on the board early with her first goal of the season in the seventh minute. Diana Matheson started the play, winning the ball with a slide tackle and then passing to Amy Rodriguez. The Utah forward played a leading pass through the Spirit defense that O’Hara ran onto the end of and hit past Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe to make it 1-0.

Matheson got a goal of her own in the 66th minute, once again with a slide tackle to win the ball, this time from Spirit defender Estelle Johnson. Matheson won the ball, got up, caught Bledsoe off her line and chipped it in for her first goal since 2016. Matheson missed all of the 2017 season due to a torn ACL.

Utah improved to 1-1-4 (7 points) with the win and the Spirit fell to 1-3-2 (5 points).

It’s the first time the Spirit have been shut out this season, and they didn’t get a shot on goal until the 91st minute when Francisca Ordega‘s shot was stopped by Utah goalkeeper Abby Smith. Ordega had scored in three straight games coming into the game, but Smith stopped her streak.

The Spirit outshot Utah Royals FC 12-10, but trailed in shots on goal 5-1. Utah Royals FC held a slight possession edge 52.8% to 47.2%.

Utah Royals FC continue their home stand on Wednesday night when the Orlando Pride come to town. The Spirit stay on the road and travel to North Carolina to take on the Courage on Saturday night.
