Sam Kerr of the Chicago Red Stars has been voted NWSL Player of the Week for Week 23 of the
2019 season by the NWSL Media Association. Kerr scored two goals and assisted one in Chicago’s 3-1 win against the Washington Spirit, booking Chicago’s place in the playoffs.
The spotlight dawned on Kerr as she scored the first goal in the ninth minute, tying her goalscoring record from 2017 with her 17th goal of the season. After receiving a pass from Katie Johnson, Kerr made her way to the right side of the field where she chipped the ball over Washington Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe. Kerr then assisted Yuki Nagasato with a square pass across the face of the goal 14 minutes later for Chicago’s second goal of the match. In the 49th minute, Nagasato returned the favor when she fed Kerr a pass from the left side of the field, allowing Kerr to dribble towards the center of the box before taking a shot to the left post for her second tally of the contest.
With the brace against the Spirit, Kerr now holds NWSL’s goalscoring record for a player in a single season with 18 goals thus far.
Chicago’s next match will be on Saturday, September 28, as they face Utah Royals FC, which is Chicago’s final match of the regular season.
