Women’s World Cup: Italy, Netherlands advance to the quarterfinals
Seven European teams have made it to the quarterfinals, joined by the United States

Italy 2 | China PR 0

Italy advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over China PR. Valentina Giacinti and Aurora Galli scored to send Italy to their first appearance in the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals since 1991. They’ll face the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Valenciennes.

 

Netherlands 2 | Japan 1

Two goals from Lieke Martens sent the Netherlands through to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Japan. Martens scored in the 17th minute and then, with the scored tied 1-1, converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute for the game-winner. The Netherlands were awarded the penalty after Saki Kumagai was called for a handball in the box. They’ll meet Italy on Saturday in the quarterfinals in Valenciennes.
