The North Carolina Courage claimed former Houston Dash midfielder Denise O’Sullivan off waivers and signed Norwegian defender Nora Holstad (pending receipt of her P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate), the club said this week.
O’Sullivan made 11 appearances for the Dash this season, her second with the team, with one assist.
Holstad most recently competed for Norway at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 tournament, playing every minute of Norway’s three games in the Netherlands. She had spent the last four seasons with Bayern Munich in Germany.
“Nora [Holstad] will add defensive depth and strength to our defensive unit,” Courage head coach Paul Riley said in a team press release. “She is also a multi-use addition to our squad and adds coverage to our defensive midfield area. She has experience, composure on the ball and certainly brings a massive physical element to the game. She has huge international experience and her hunger to be successful in the NWSL bodes well for our team. She is a big addition so late in the season and we look forward to integrating her with the squad once her Euro commitment is complete.”
Of O’Sullivan, Riley said: “Denise is an excellent footballer with superb soccer IQ, soft feet, and a Rolls Royce engine. She is hungry to show her value in this league, and her attributes fit our identity really well. Looking forward to watching her further develop her game around our other world-class midfielders.”
