Courage clinch a playoff spot as Williams nets hat trick in 4-0 win
The Courage are 14-1-3

The North Carolina Courage won 4-0 on the road over Sky Blue FC on Saturday night thanks to a Lynn Williams hat trick. It’s the fifth-straight win for the Courage. Following the rest of the day’s results, they became the first team to clinch a spot in the NWSL Playoffs.

The win moves them to 14-1-3 with 45 points and 16 points clear of the second-place Seattle Reign FC. With a win and a Reign loss next week, the Courage can have the NWSL Shield wrapped up before the calendar hits August.

Williams scored all three goals in the second half. First, in the 56th minute on an assist from Kristen Hamilton. Her second came in the 72nd minute on an assist from Debinha. She finished off the night with a score in the 89th minute.

Abby Erceg opened the scoring in the 15th minute after Hamilton hustled to keep the ball from going out of bounds and then whipped a cross into the box for Erceg to head home.

Sky Blue FC dropped to 0-12-3 with the loss.

The Courage will next face Utah Royals FC on Friday night in Utah. Sky Blue FC will host Portland Thorns FC on Saturday night.
