  • The North Carolina Courage beat the Washington Spirit 2-1 on Saturday on the road at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The win moved the Courage into fourth place in the NWSL, pending the rest of the weekend’s results. They are 4-2-4 with 16 points. The Spirit are still in first, though they could fall if Portland Thorns FC win in Week 11. The Spirit are 5-2-3 with 18 points.
  • The loss snapped a seven game unbeaten streak for the Spirit.
  • The game marked the return of players for both teams after their time at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Spirit welcomed back Amy Harrison (Australia), Chloe Logarzo (Australia) and Cheyna Matthews (Jamaica). Debinha (Brazil) was back for the Courage. Abby Erceg (New Zealand) was originally in the starting XI for the Courage, but was a late scratch.
  • Debinha scored the first goal of the night for the Courage right at the end of the first half. She earned a foul in the box and a penalty kick attempt. Her initial effort was well stopped by Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe, but Debinha cleaned up the rebound for her second goal of the year.
  • Courage rookie forward Leah Pruitt scored her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute, after Lynn Williams forced a turnover from the Spirit backline.
  • Crystal Thomas scored a header goal in the 82nd minute to pull the Spirit a goal back late.
