Utah Royals FC midfielder Diana Matheson has been suspended for one game by the NWSL Disciplinary Committee, the league announced Tuesday.
The league said in a statement: “The NWSL Disciplinary Committee announced today that it has suspended Utah Royals FC midfielder Diana Matheson for one game for endangering the safety of an opponent that was determined to be a major game misconduct in an incident involving Portland Thorns FC defender Midge Purce in the 45th minute of Utah’s match against Portland on July 6. Matheson will serve the suspension during the Royals FC’s next match on July 11 vs. Seattle Reign FC.”
Matheson was issued a yellow card by referee Farhad Dadkho for a late challenge on Purce near the end of the first half. Purce left the game with an ankle injury suffered on the play.
The NWSL also announced that Orlando Pride assistant coach Khano Smith has been issued an undisclosed fine, in addition to the automatic one-game suspension, after being ejected during Saturday’s game. Smith was ejected by referee Danielle Chesky after the Pride had a goal disallowed due to a foul called in the Pride’s 2-1 win over the Washington Spirit.
The league said in a statement: “The NWSL Disciplinary Committee has issued an undisclosed fine to Orlando Pride assistant coach Khano Smith in addition to the automatic one-game suspension for being dismissed by the referee for inappropriate behavior and language towards officials during the 77th minute of Orlando’s match against Washington Spirit on July 7. Smith will serve the suspension during the Pride’s next match on July 11 vs. Houston Dash.”
