Chicago midfielder Julie Ertz scored in the 41st  minute and the Red Stars won their home opener 1-0 over FC Kansas City.

Red Stars forward Christen Press missed a penalty kick in the 49th minute that would have doubled the score, but Chicago stayed in control throughout most of the match. Ertz was fouled in the box by rookie FCKC defender Christina Gibbons, setting up the penalty.

Chicago pressured Nicole Barnhart all match, forcing the FC Kansas City keeper to make four saves in the match. Her best effort was a 27th minute point-blank shot on Ertz, who was very active in the match.

FC Kansas City pressed deep in stoppage time, but could not make it through the Chicago defense and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who made three saves in the game.
