The Chicago Red Stars acquired midfielder Kristie Mewis from the Washington Spirit on Monday via a trade. The Red Stars sent a conditional first-round pick in the 2018 NWSL College Draft to the Spirit in exchange for Mewis.
Chicago has two first round picks in the 2018 draft, and the Washington Spirit will receive the higher of the two picks. In addition, the Red Stars waived waived midfielder Morgan Proffitt to make space for Mewis on their roster.
The Red Stars could use a fresh spark, after dropping their third straight result in eight days and winless in their last four matches. They also have the smallest goal differential of the top four teams in the league, at only +2 with 25 goals for and 23 goals against. Kristie Mewis has scored two goals and tallied an assist in her 14 games for the Spirit this season.
Spirit head coach and general manager Jim Gabarra said on Saturday, before the team played in the Game of the Week, that the trade made sense in the long run for his club. “When we acquired Kristie, our team, our roster was in a different place,” he said. “She was an important part of our roster at the beginning of the season. We didn’t know that we were going to get [Mallory Pugh]. We didn’t know for sure that [Estefanía Banini] was going to be coming back. We don’t know that Havana [Solaun] was going to be as effective as she has been. We had the opportunity to make some moves now here and maybe get a top draft pick or strengthen our team next year by using a quality piece and maybe providing that to a team that’s in the playoff hunt.”
