Rapinoe tallied five goals in four games during July as the Reign went 2-1-1 this month. The Reign are holding on to the four and final playoff spot, as Rapinoe led the charge for redemption after the team missed out on last year’s postseason entirely.
Megan Rapinoe now also leads the league in goals scored, with her 12 goals putting her first in the race for the Golden Boot, in front of the likes of Sky Blue FC’s Sam Kerr, Orlando Pride’s Marta and the Chicago Red Stars’ Christen Press. She has never scored more than five goals in any of her previous seasons in the league, a number she reached both the 2013 and 2015 seasons. She’s now also only the fifth player in the league to score at least 12 goals in a single season, along with her former Reign FC teammate Kim Little, Crystal Dunn (15 goals in 2015), Amy Rodriguez (13 goals in 2014) and Lauren Holiday (12 goals in 2012).
Rapinoe wins her first ever Player of the Month award after two multiple-goal games in July. She kicked off the month with a brace in Seattle’s 2-0 win over Cascadia rivals the Portland Thorns. To wrap up her July, she upped herself and scored a hat trick in Seattle’s 5-4 win over Sky Blue FC on July 22. She is the first player in league history to ever score a hat trick via a free kick, penalty kick and a goal scored during run of play.
The Reign and their leading scorer return to NWSL action next month against the second-place North Carolina Courage. The Reign will travel to Sahlen’s Stadium and hope to pick up their second away victory this season on August 5.
The NWSL Player of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
