North Carolina Courage forwards Jessica McDonald and Lynn Williams scored their first goals of the 2017 season and midfielder Samantha Mewis converted a penalty kick as the Courage topped the Orlando Pride 3-1 in front of 4,586 fans at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park to improve to 3-0-0 on the season. The loss drops Orlando to 0-2-1.

McDonald’s goal was the 32nd regular season goal of her NWSL career, tying her with former Seattle Reign FC midfielder Kim Little for the most in NWSL history.

Mewis’ penalty kick came after Pride defender Laura Alleway was shown a yellow card for a handball in the box.

Courage goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo, who was only called on to make to make one save in back-to-back shutout wins before Saturday’s game, stopped four shots in the game, including a point-blank stop on Pride forward Marta in the 39th minute.

The game marked Marta’s first NWSL start after playing 31 minutes in her debut last week vs. Washington. Despite several dangerous offensive crosses, the Pride could not find the finishing touch on any of her passes. Orlando’s only goal was scored by Camila in the 27th minute off an assist from Alanna Kennedy.

Before the game, members of last year’s NWSL Championship winning Western New York Flash team received their championship rings and Williams received her 2016 NWSL MVP and Golden Boot trophies.
