Sky Blue FC forward Katie Johnson has been voted NWSL Player of the Week for Week 21 of the 2018 season by the NWSL Media Association.
Johnson scored a brace to help Sky Blue earn a point at home vs. Utah Royals FC on Saturday night. Johnson scored her third and fourth goal on the season and finished the match with three shots in 29 touches. The forward has played in 16 games this year and started 11. Sky Blue’s 2-2 result against Utah Royals FC improved them to 0-14-5.
This is the first time Johnson has been honored as the Player of the Week.
Johnson’s first goal on the night handed Sky Blue their second lead ever over a team this season. In the 14th minute a tough battle in the box between Utah Royals FC defender Rachel Corsie and Sky Blue forward Carli Lloyd resulted in a free ball in the box where Sky Blue midfielder Raquel Rodriguez got a hold of. Rodriguez slipped in Johnson who slotted the ball home far post for her third goal of the season.
Johnson’s second goal started from an initial chip pass to herself. Johnson cheekily chipped a Utah defender and attempted to play a pass into the feet of teammate Imani Dorsey, but the ball deflected back into her own path. Johnson then struck it into the upper 90 to make it 2-0 in the 48th minute.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter
