Megan Rapinoe with a goal and an assist

Megan Rapinoe scored a goal and added an assist as Seattle Reign FC beat the Washington Spirit 2-1 at UW Medicine Pitch at Memorial Stadium in Seattle, Washington.

Rapinoe’s goal came on a free kick from nearly 30 yards out in the seventh minute. Seattle earned the free kick after midfielder Allie Long was fouled by Washington’s Ashley Hatch.

New Reign forward Jodie Taylor scored in the 35th minute for Seattle. Rapinoe tapped a pass into the box and Taylor ran onto the end of it. Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe got her foot on Taylor’s shot, but it still bounced over the line.

Rapinoe finished the match with 11 total shots, six on goal, two chances created and 85 total touches, according to Opta.

The Spirit drew a goal back in the second half thanks to Joanna Lohman. The Spirit midfielder subbed into the game at the start of the second half, her first minutes since tearing her ACL in the first game of the season last year. She scored just 22 minutes into her return, collecting a pass from Estefanía Banini and then turning and shooting through a crowd of Seattle defenders.

Both goalkeepers in the match came up with a few big saves. Seattle Reign FC goalkeeper Michelle Betos, playing in her first NWSL game since 2016, stopped a long-distance strike from Andi Sullivan in the 86th minute. Sullivan, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NWSL College Draft, made her professional debut in the match.

In the 48th minute, Bledsoe made a stop on a shot from Reign forward Nahomi Kawasumi.
