The National Women’s Soccer League Media Associated unanimously voted Sky Blue FC forward Sam Kerr the Player of the Week for Week 17. Kerr’s four-goal performance on Saturday night against Seattle Reign FC led her club to a 5-4 win. She was the first player to score four goals in one game and the first player to ever record two hat tricks in the same season. All four of her goals came in the second half, in the 48th, 68th, 71st and 94th minutes.
With the win, Sky Blue FC became the first club in NWSL history to ever come back from a three-goal deficit to win, and the first time to ever force a comeback win after trailing at the end of 90 minutes.
Kerr is in control of the 2017 Golden Boot race, with 15 goals this season. She’s also the first player to ever break 40 career goals in the league, with her fourth and final one her 41st career goal. With five games remaining in the season for Sky Blue FC, she’s one goal behind former Seattle Reign FC midfielder Kim Little’s single-season record of 16 goals set in 2014.
Kerr has been named Player of the Week twice already this season, in Week 9 and Week 12, as well as picking up back-to-back Player of the Month awards in May and June. This week’s award is the fifth of her NWSL career, after winning it once in 2014 and once in 2016 as well.
Kerr will get a chance to break some more records this weekend against the Boston Breakers, when Sky Blue FC plays at home on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. ET.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
