Algarve Cup Day 2 Results  Canada 1 Russia 0


Christine Sinclair scored international goal No. 170 on Friday as Canada beat Russia 1-0 at the Algarve Cup.

The goal came in Sinclair’s 255th career start. The Portland Thorns FC forward is now just 14 behind Abby Wambach’s record of 184 international goals.


The win puts Canada in better position at the tournament after an opening game defeat to Sweden. They’ll play Korea Republic on Monday, March 5, in the final group stage game.


It’s also the first win for new Canada head coach Kenneth Heiner-Møller.

Japan 2 Iceland 1


Seattle Reign FC midfielder Rumi Utsugi scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute for Japan over Iceland.


Yuika Sugasawa opened the scoring for Japan in the 16th minute. Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir tied the game for Iceland in the 74th minute before Utsugi’s game-winner.


It’s the first win over the tournament for Japan, who fell 6-2 to the Netherlands on Wednesday.


Australia 0 Portugal 0


Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr’s scoring streak came to an end as the Matildas were unable to score vs. Portugal. Seattle Reign FC goalkeeper Lydia Williams picked up the shutout. Kerr had scored in a record seven straight games for Australia.

Orlando Pride rookie Nadia Gomes earned her first international cap for Portugal in the game.


Netherlands 3 Denmark 2


A rematch of the Euro 2017 final turned into a wild affair. Denmark lost the lead twice before conceding an own goal in the 94th minute to lose 3-2. Dutch forward Lieke Martens scored her third goal of the tournament in the 78th minute to tie make it 2-2.


Other Algarve Cup results: Norway beat China 2-0; Sweden and the Republic of Korea tied 1-1.


Cyprus Cup Day 2 Results


South Africa 1 Hungary 0


New Houston Dash forward Thembi Kgatlana scored the game’s only goal in South Africa’s 1-0 win over Hungary.



Italy 3 Wales 0


Seattle Reign FC midfielder Jess Fishlock and Wales fell 3-0 to Italy in their second game of the tournament. Italy has now won twice and outscored opponents 6-0 in the tournament.


Other Cyprus Cup results: Switzerland rebounded from an opening game loss to beat Finland 4-0; Austria topped the Czech Republic 2-0; Spain and Belgium tied 0-0; Slovakia beat Korea DPR 1-0.


Alanya Women’s Cup Mexico 5 Jordan 1


Sky Blue FC forward Katie Johnson scored for Mexico in their 5-1 win over Jordan.
