Western New York Flash NWSL Championship

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is a ten-team Division-I women’s professional soccer league featuring national team players from around the world. The clubs are the Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars, Houston Dash, FC Kansas City, Orlando Pride, Portland Thorns FC, Seattle Reign FC, Sky Blue FC, the Washington Spirit and the Western New York Flash. Based in Chicago, the NWSL is supported by the Canadian Soccer Association and the United States Soccer Federation.

In 2016, each of the league’s 10 clubs played a total of 20 games during a 163-day span, with a schedule consisting of 10 matches at home and 10 away. The 2016 NWSL regular season began on Saturday, April 16 and concluded the weekend of Sept. 24-25 with Portland Thorns FC claiming the NWSL Shield for the best regular-season record. The top four teams qualified for the NWSL playoffs and competed in the semifinals on Friday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 2. The NWSL crowned its 2016 champion on Sunday, Oct. 9, with the Western New York Flash outlasting the Washington Spirit on penalties to earn their first league title.
