Olympique Lyonnais won the UEFA Women’s Champions League Thursday in Cardiff, Wales, defeating Paris Saint-Germain in penalty kicks for the title.Orlando Pride forward Alex Morgan, currently playing with Lyon, started the match, but was subbed out in the 23rd minute. She missed the French Cup Final two weeks ago (which Lyon also won over PSG in penalty kicks) with an injured hamstring. She tweeted photos holding the trophy after the game. [Empty Body] Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain went to penalty kicks after the first 120 minutes ended 0-0. In the shootout, PSG goalkeeper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek made a stellar save vs. Eugénie Le Sommer on Lyon’s second attempt, but Paris’ Grace Geyoro’s following penalty was saved by Lyon goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi. The shootout eventually went to sudden death with the goalkeepers facing off against one another. Kiedrzynek pushed her penalty wide of the net and Bouhaddi converted hers to give Lyon its second straight title. Morgan became just the third American to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League title. Orlando Pride defender Ali Krieger and fellow American Gina Lewandowski won the title in 2008 with FFC Frankfurt (then known as the UEFA Cup and a two-leg final). [Empty Body] Morgan was recently named to the rosters for the United States’ upcoming friendlies vs. Sweden and Norway. She is expected to make her return to the Pride later this month.
