For 12 years, when fans thought of the Portland Thorns, the second thought was Christine Sinclair. The iconic forward retired at the end of the 2024 season, and less than a year later, the Thorns are honoring in a way fit for a legend.
Portland announced on July 23 they would induct her into the Thorns Hall of Fame. Sinclair’s illustrious career will be celebrated at Providence Park on Oct. 4 before Portland faces off against Bay FC.
Sinclair’s soccer resume rivals any of the greats, and her tenacity is baked into the Thorns’s DNA. As a captain in the team’s first season, Sinclair spent 12 years in Portland, which included three NWSL Championships, two NWSL Shields, and the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup.
She is still the club’s all-time leading goal scorer across all NWSL competitions with 79 goals, which also puts her second all-time in league history. She played in 237 games, started 215, played 18,579 total minutes, and converted 13 penalty kicks in all competitions, all club records.
As a member of the Canadian National Team, Sinclair went to six-straight FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments and four-straight Summer Olympics, closing it out with a gold medal in 2021. In 331 appearances for Team Canada, Sinclair put up 190 goals, the most international goals by a male or female, and notched 54 assists.
Her steadfast performances for her country earned her eight FIFA World Player of the Year nominations and 14 Canada Women’s Soccer Player of the Year honors.
It’s not just the Thorns Hall of Fame that is honoring Sinclair this year. She will also be inducted into the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame and the Canada Sports Hall of Fame later this year.
