The Orlando Pride heard the doubters, but they’re not listening.
The reigning champions are moving on to the semifinals after a 2-0 win over the Seattle Reign, and while the match ended on an emotional moment for Luana, who scored her first NWSL goal after beating cancer, there was also a healthy dose of fire.
Haley McCutcheon got the Pride on the board, scoring in the NWSL quarterfinals in back-to-back years and earning her first game-winner in the playoffs. After the game, McCutcheon was asked what she had to say to people who thought the Pride would flounder on the road to defending their title.
“We love it,” she said with a smile. “Keep doubting us. You did it last year, and look what happened.”
In the waning minutes of the game, Marta showed exactly what that looks like on the pitch. She took off in a full sprint down the field, and the 39-year-old left everyone in the dust, ultimately drawing a foul in the box and earning the Pride a PK attempt.
Even after a full 90 and stoppage time, Marta never seemed to run out of steam.
It was one of those “you have to see it to believe it moments” that, when stitched together, build a picture of Marta’s career. She may have been the oldest player on the pitch, but her greatness ages like wine.
After the game, Marta was fired up.
“I like when people talk so much [expletive] about Pride and don’t give credit because it makes me feel good,” Marta said. “It makes me feel like I want to go and play and prove they’re completely wrong. I think we proved [it] tonight.”
BRB, running through a brick wall.
