It was yet another wild weekend in the NWSL, and though Gotham wasn’t a part of it, they found a way to make some history of their own on the international stage.
Gotham became the very first winner of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, defeating Mexico’s UANL Tigres, 1-0, on Saturday night.
The inaugural CONCACAF W Champions Cup is meant to crown the greatest team in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Thanks to yet another clutch Esther González goal in the 82nd minute, that title came home with Gotham.
As exciting as an international win is on its own, there was more at stake. The win in this tournament guarantees Gotham a spot in two more inaugural international competitions – the 2026 FIFA Champions Club and the 2028 FIFA Women’s Club World Cup.
While Gotham walked away victorious in first place, the Portland Thorns earned third place in a match against Club América, winning 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Pietra Tordin, Payton Linnehan, and Olivia Moultrie all scored in the matchup.
Though the 2024-25 CONCAF W Champions Cup ended, it won’t be long before the 2025-26 CONCACAF W Champions Cup play starts. Because Gotham, the Pride, and the Spirit finished the 2024 season in the top three spots, they have all qualified for group stages. NWSL fans can expect to be well represented when the second iteration of this tournament starts in late summer.
International play continues this weekend, with the NWSL being well-represented, before league play picks back up for Week 11.
