Heartbreak and Triumph: Euro 2025 Semifinal Recap

Italy 1, England 2

Italy led for over an hour thanks to Barbara Bonansea’s 33rd‑minute strike, a goal sparked by Washington Spirit’s newest forward Sofia Cantore, whose service into the box set up the goal. England struggled to break through, but in the sixth minute of final stoppage time, England capitalized on a loose ball to equalize and force extra time.

Just as the final minutes of extra time and penalties drew nearer, a collision in Italy’s box was whistled for a penalty in the 118th minute. England’s spot kick was saved but not the rebound, and the Lionesses earned themselves a berth in Sunday’s final. Washington Spirit defender Esme Morgan earned her first Euro start in the victory, keeping Italy’s lead minimal and tracking back when needed.

Spain 1, Germany 0

Spain finally broke through against Germany – the same team that overcame them in the 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medal match – booking their first-ever UEFA Women’s Euro final with a 1‑0 win sealed in extra time. The World Cup champions dominated possession but found no way past Germany’s goalkeeper from Gotham FC, Ann‑Katrin Berger, until the 113th minute, when Aitana Bonmatí spun free and rifled in the decisive goal. Berger’s Gotham teammate, Esther González, earned a start and sent in multiple high shots on goal that Berger stopped, but was unable to get on the scoreboard.

After the game, the two Gotham teammates linked up to exchange jerseys. They'll reunite back in their NWSL market soon.

What’s Next

A rematch of the 2023 World Cup final awaits. Spain, chasing their first European crown, meets an England side with a grudge, aiming for back‑to‑back Euro titles.

Catch Esther González facing off against her Gotham FC teammate Jess Carter, Orlando Pride’s Anna Moorhouse, and Washington Spirit’s Esme Morgan in the UEFA Women’s Euro final this Sunday, July 27 at 12 PM ET.
